Species Spotlight: Bat Hike

May 29 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

Join naturalist Barbara Williams under the full moon to search for nocturnal wildlife. We should be able to see bats fly over just before it gets dark. As dusk turns to night we’ll lose sight of the bats but we’ll still be able to hear their voices with the Echo Meter, a device that lowers the pitch of the bats’ feeding calls so that human ears can hear them. It is a fun way to find out what species of bats are around and to eavesdrop on their insect hunting.

Last summer we recorded nine species of bats in the Forest Preserves and we hope to find those species again this summer. We’ll also be looking and listening for other night wildlife: insects, birds, frogs and mammals.

We’ll be out for a short walk on gravel, paved, mowed, or grassy paths for about an hour. The nearly full moon should give us plenty of light but please bring a small flashlight.

Rain, strong wind or thunderstorms will cancel this program. We don’t want to be out in a storm and the bats don’t either! Insect repellent recommended.
