Get Outside! 2015

Get Outside! is a back-to-nature event that is FREE and accessible for all ages. Participating families will function as a “team” and are encouraged to engage in a friendly competition as they explore forest preserves.

Dozens of free outdoor activities for you to choose from (see full Schedule). Participate in some  or all! Form a team, collect points and compete to win one of these Grand Prizes: Guided Paddling Trip donated by Rocktown Adventures This prize takes you and your favorite pals (up to six people) on a half-day guided paddle on the Rock, Sugar, Pecatonica or Kishwaukee River ! All kayaks and/or canoes, shuttle transport and other equipment will be provided. AND you’ll enjoy a delicious picnic lunch.   Get out and discover where they’re biting with a Family Fishing Package donated by Blain’s Farm and Fleet, Loves Park. Explore and capture the forest preserve’s beautiful landscapes and wildlife with a  Nature Photography Package donated by Camera Craft.  This prize features a Ricoh Adventure Kit includes the Ricoh WG-20 Camera with battery and charger, a Pentax 8×22 Compact Binocular and an Eat’ N Tool!  Yeah, that last one is a bit hokey …   it’s a spoon, fork, bottle opener and wrench.  Everything you need to enjoy and record your outdoor adventures!

To take advantage of all the free summer Get Outside! activities,  form a team of two or more family members or friends. Register your team using the on-line form below. (Teams must include at least one person over the age of 18). Your team can pick up its passport at the May 30th kick-off event, or at one of these locations: FPWC Headquarters, 5500 Northrock Drive, Rockford, 61103 Severson Dells Nature Center, 8786 Montague Road, Rockford, 61102 Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden, 2715 S Main St, Rockford,  61102 Macktown Living History Center, 2221 Freeport Rd, Rockton,  61072 Sand Bluff Bird Observatory, 5209 Haas Rd, Shirland,  61107 You can also get a passport from the leader of a guided activity that you attend.

Earn Points for Prizes

When teams check-in at each scheduled activity, they are awarded 4 points for their participation.  Teams must provide proof of completion of self-guided activities (e.g., a sketch or photograph) and will be awarded 2 points for each activity completed. Each team that earns 22 points or more will be entered into a drawing for the grand prize (kayak). Teams earning 18 points or more will entered into a drawing for a second tier prize (camping equipment), and teams earning 14 points or more will be entered into a drawing for a third tier prize (binoculars and bird guide). Teams will enter drawings by turning in their completed stamped passports after August 1. The three winners will be selected by drawing from the qualifying validated passports. Winners will be announced August 7th, 2015. Submit your completed and validated passport by August 1 at Winnebago County Forest Preserve District Headquarters, 5500 Northrock Drive, Rockford, IL 61103 or at Rocktown Adventures at 313 N. Madison Ave, Rockford, IL. Registration is required to qualify for grand prizes. Passports of teams not registered on-line will not be eligible for the grand prize drawings.

Kick-off event May 30th

Nature Fiesta is the kick-off event for the 2015  Get Outside! program. Each family attending will receive a Get Outside! passport. This festive and enlightening event is FREE and open to the public. Part environmental education and part festival, Nature Fiesta is an afternoon when people from all over the community come together to enjoy learning about our local nature. Exhibits, displays, live animals, crafts, guided hikes and games will get visitors of all ages interested in our rivers, birds, butterflies and wildflowers.

Grand Prize Drawing

Teams that earn enough points to qualify for the grand prizes will be entered in to a drawing by turning in their passports by August 1. Winners will be announced on August 7, 2015. (see above Earn Points for Prizes for qualifying point levels).
