Graphic Design Agency Interviews

ColinKurtis – Judy Barnard introduces Colin Kampmier, owner of ColinKurtis, who is making a presentation for a possible logo design.  ColinKurtis is a firm that was started in 1996 and located in Rockford.  Colin states that the company specializes as a brand strategy and brand driving firm which is the very beginning stages of identifying what the mark is that identifies the organization.  Colin describes the firm’s two main qualities as very intimate and inquisitive.  First thing they develop is a creative brief which answers questions such as objectives, tone, mood and audience the logo is trying to target.  Colin shows examples of prior logo developments such as Berner Food and Beverage and Campfire Marshmallows.

ShawCraft Signs – Judy Barnard introduces Jay Allen, founder of ShawCraft Signs.  Jay gives a brief description of prior experience working with Onsite Woodwork, and landscape architects Tom Graceffa and John Cook.  Jay describes how his standpoint is different regarding signs than many other design companies.  He explains how the sign design needs to be an integral part of exactly what you decide to do regarding the logo.  Jay explains several of the different materials available to create signs, along with their advantages and disadvantages.  Jay clarifies that his company does not do all of the print media and is only interested in doing the signs and logo design.  Regardless of the decision made for the logo design, Jay explains he would like to be considered for the making of the signs.

Judy Barnard states that she would like to take a vote on Monday after the final logo design presentations are made.  Audrey Johnson voices her concern with the ColinKurtis firm is that he may not have enough knowledge about the Winnebago County Forest Preserves in order to prepare a design in a timely manner.  Mary McNamara Bernsten and Judy both feel ColinKurtis would deliver within the specified timeline set by the District.  Mary states she likes the creative brief to get everyone on the same page and thinks his firm could appeal to the masses.  Mary McNamara Bernsten believes four minds on a design team is more beneficial than one.  Mary believes Colin has an incredible attention to detail and is very task oriented.  Jamie Johannsen gives her opinion on ColinKurtis and agrees a lot with what Mary said.  Jamie Johannsen likes that Colin states how important strategy is and she believes that is where the design needs are at, because it really needs to be about how the logo strategically functions.

Mary and Jamie state whichever company is chosen they need to make sure they are part of their team since many of the items are time sensitive and everything is always in motion.  Judy voices her concern regarding who the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District mass is at this time as she believes it has changed 100% from a few decades ago.  Mike Holan points out that is a challenge as many ethnic groups are geared towards different areas of the preserves.  Everyone agrees it needs to be a simple, strong concept so it can work for everyone.  Mike mentions how many agencies have a tree design and thinks that the District should try getting away from that look.  Everyone agrees that whatever the logo is it needs to look good in all aspects such as the website, signs and business cards.

ComEd Grant Application – Judy makes a motion to approve the grant application signage for ComEd at Ferguson Forest Preserve. Motion passed unanimously.

Meeting adjourned at 12:00 PM.
