Eagles

Bald Eagle
(Haliaeetus leucocephalus)
Bald eagles have made a remarkable comeback from the brink of extinction and have over 100 nests in Illinois. They mainly prey on fish but also eat injured ducks, carrion and small mammals. Just fifteen years ago there were no Bald Eagles in Winnebago County. Today an estimated 16 eagles are nesting here, thanks to improved habitat and cleaner streams.

Golden Eagle
(Aquila chrysaetos)
The Golden Eagle is a rare migrant in Winnebago County. Golden eagles prey on rabbits, ground squirrels and other small mammals, insects, snakes, and birds.
