Controlled Burn info for 2014
February 17, 2014
Dear Neighbor,
The Winnebago County Forest Preserve District staff will be conducting controlled burns from mid March through November of this year. A controlled burn is a management technique used by trained and experienced professionals to control unwanted plant and tree species. Burning is a very economical and efficient method in maintaining and preserving our natural plant communities. The Forest Preserve District has met all guidelines set by the State of Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and possesses the required permits.
A control burn is a man-induced fire used as a management tool to: 1) Recycle nutrients 2) Stimulate native plant communities 3) Reduce accumulation of forest debris 4) Control unwanted plant species 5) Rejuvenate woodlands, savannas, and prairies 6) Promote seed production and viability
Through the use of controlled burns the Forest Preserve staff can restore, preserve, and better manage our beautiful forests and prairies.
If anyone receiving this letter has medical issues and concerns regarding your condition please let me know and we will try to notify you in advance of any prescribed burning. Our website will also have notifications of when and where we are burning.
To better notify and communicate with our neighbors and users if you go to our website at WCFPD.org and give us your contact information we can send you emails of when and where we are conducting management activities. Your information will not be shared with anyone else and is only used to help inform you of forest preserve activities.
We thank you for your cooperation. If you have any question you may contact me at 815-877-6464 x 2671
