R.E.A.P. Volunteer Workday (Restoration.Education.Appreciation.Preservation.)

June 19 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Deer Run Forest Preserve (East Entrance – 5691 River Road, Cherry Valley, IL – Meet at Lower Parking Lot)

675.6-acre Deer Run offers over 7 miles of hiking and equestrian trails, which connect with Oak Ridge Forest Preserve to the south. It offers a mosaic of high quality prairie, river and floodplain forest natural areas.

This preserve is aptly named; deer are often seen here, and its diversity of habitat makes it a prime wildlife viewing spot. Deer Run contains a segment of the Kishwaukee River, hundreds of acres of restored prairie, floodplain wetlands and ponds, as well as woods. The “Blue Hole” on the northern edge is a floodplain oxbow pond frequented by frogs, turtles, dragonflies, beavers and herons.

Today R.E.A.P. Volunteers will collect native seed. When our work is done, we’ll take a hike to discover bees, dragonflies, butterflies and beautiful wildflowers!

RSVP to let us know you’re coming!

Note: Families are welcome! We encourage parents/guardians to participate alongside their children, so please no “drop offs.”  The person responsible for the child’s transportation should plan to stay on the premises during the workday.

It is important to remember:

  • We will practice social distancing, but feel free to bring a face covering. If you are sick, PLEASE stay home.
  • For sanitary reasons, please plan to bring your own water, snack and work gloves.
  • Proper off-trail outdoor workday attire recommended – long pants, long sleeves & sturdy, waterproof shoes (no sandals or flip-flops, please)
  • Wear your insect repellent and sunscreen.
  • In case of extreme weather (storms, excessive heat, etc.) our workday will be canceled – check our website and Facebook page for event cancellation information

R.E.A.P. Volunteer Workdays are held on the third Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. until Noon throughout the summer!  No experience? No problem!  Our natural resource experts offer hands-on ecological restoration training consisting of invasive plant removal and native seed collection, plus enriching conservation activities when our work is done.
