Bat Monitoring- Learn to Identify Bats!

May 17 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Free

Join citizen scientists and prospective citizen scientists in the field to observe and learn how the Echo Meter is used to detect and identify the bats of the summer night. Led by naturalist Barbara Williams we will see bats fly over just before it gets dark. As dusk turns to night we’ll lose sight of the bats but we’ll still be able to hear their voices with the Echo Meter, a device that lowers the pitch of the bats’ feeding calls so that human ears can hear them. It is a fun way to find out what species of bats are around and to eavesdrop on their insect hunting.

Last summer we recorded nine species of bats in the Forest Preserves and we hope to find those species again this summer.

Meet at the Sleepy Hollow shelter on the eastside of the preserve. Use the 6303 Mulford Road entrance and follow road all the way down to the river.

This will be a short walk on gravel, paved, mowed, or grassy paths for about an hour. The nearly full moon should give us plenty of light but please bring a small flashlight. Rain, strong wind or thunderstorms will cancel this program. We don’t want to be out in a storm and the bats don’t either! Insect repellent recommended. Please register in advance by e-mailing andrea@seversondells.org.
