What to Know About Winter Preserve Access

Enjoy the forest preserves all winter long! We work hard to keep many sites open- no matter what Mother Nature may throw our way. Vehicle access to preserves will be limited to select preserve locations once the roadways become snow or ice covered due to staff and equipment limitations.  Walk in use is welcomed at all preserve locations, with some hard paths kept cleared, but not all parking lots will be available and not all gates or roadways will be open. Below is a planned list of areas accessible by vehicles and hard paths for pedestrian use for the winter season.

Klehm Arboretum will be closed Sundays from November through February and will resume daily hours 9:00am – 4:00pm in March. Klehm’s paved paths will be clear for walking Monday – Saturday 9:00am – 4:00pm (time of last entry is 3:30 pm).  Bring your boots, snowshoes and skis and enjoy the Klehm view!

  • Blackhawk Springs – Mulford Rd entrance ONLY with select parking lots and rec path
  • Colored Sands – Yale Bridge parking lot, front gate parking at banding station
  • Deer Run – front parking lot
  • Espenscheid – front parking lot
  • Four Lakes – Main parking lot at South entrance, and entrance road at North side.
  • Fuller – front parking lot
  • Headquarters – all lots and hard path
  • Hononegah – front parking lot; walking areas on select roadways inside preserve
